PokerStars weekly roundup: 16 November 2009
November 16, 2009
Cada crowned champion of the world.
Joe Cada, a 21-year-old from Michigan, became the youngest ever World Champion of Poker last week when he
won the final table of the main event in the Penn and Teller Theatre at the Rio Hotel in Las Vegas. Ahead of 6,494
players who started the event back in July, Cada triumphed in the long awaited final table, beating poker legend
Phil Ivey, fellow PokerStars players Kevin Schaffel and Eric Buchman and the chip leader for most of the final
Darvin Moon, having started fifth in chips and at one point having just 1% of the chips in play. The heads-up duel
was one of huge swings and the odd pair of nines, all of which can be read about on the PokerStars Blog
(http://www.pokerstarsblog.com/wsop/2009/wsop-crowns-joe-cada-youngest-main-event-061007.html). Cada’s
reward for his astonishing comeback – the coveted World Series of Poker gold bracelet and the small matter of
$8,546,435.
The Sunday Million becomes the Sunday $2.5 million
PokerStars (http://www.pokerstars.com) was setting new records last weekend when the PokerStars Sunday
Million became a celebration of the $250 million in prize money already earned by players since the flagship online
event began. To mark the occasion PokerStars ensured there was a $2.5million prize pool, that’s an extra million
to the usual prize pool, earning the eventual winner more than $365,000. It also coincided with a new record for
players online on PokerStars at the same time when 317,000 were recorded playing at once.
The thriller in… Cebu
The latest leg of the Asia Pacific Poker Tour (http://www.appt.com) came to a conclusion over the weekend at the
Shangri-La Mactan Resort and Spa in Cebu, Philippines where Dong-bin Han from Korea became just the second
Asian-based player to win a leg of the tour in what was only his first major tournament
(http://www.pokerstarsblog.com/appt/2009/appt-cebu-korean-victory-in-asian-paradi-061243.html). The 37-year-old
outlasted a 319-strong field made up of the region’s best players winning the first prize of PHP 7,410,000
(US$160,000). The prize pool of PHP 29,086,420 (US$622,036) made this the richest event of its kind on
Philippine soil. The tour now heads south to Australia (http://www.appt.com/tournaments/sydney/) for the final
event of the third season, the grand final at Star City in Sydney. It all starts on December 1st.
Sunshine, beaches and the EPT Vilamoura
The next leg of the European Poker Tour (http://www.ept.com) is underway in the Algarve region of Vilamoura
(http://www.europeanpokertour.com/tournaments/vilamoura/index.html) in Portugal. It’s yet another new
destination for the tour which this year will feature 13 stops, including first time visits to Kyiv
(http://www.europeanpokertour.com/tournaments/kyiv/) and the Austrian Alps
(http://www.europeanpokertour.com/tournaments/snowfest/), as well as Portugal. Several hundred players have
descended on Casino Vilamoura to capture the first EPT crown from these parts and the name of that winner will
be known after the final table on Sunday. The tour then takes a week to head back across Europe to the Czech
capital Prague (http://www.europeanpokertour.com/tournaments/prague/ ). In the meantime coverage from the
front lines of EPT Vilamoura can be found on the PokerStars Blog (http://www.pokerstarsblog.com) .
Tournaments in all corners of the world
In true PokerStars fashion, if one tournament is finishing somewhere two more are starting somewhere else
around the world. As the EPT (http://www.ept.com) touches down in Portugal the same is happening in Costa Rica
where the next leg of the Latin American Poker Tour’s (http://www.lapt.com) third season starts this week in Playa
Conchal (http://www.lapt.com/tournaments/playaconchal/). It’s the second time the tour has visited these parts, the
last time being in season one when Valdemar Kwaysser, a PokerStars qualifier from Hungary, turned $200 into
$280,000. This year the Paradisius Playa Conchal Resort will be home to the tour, starting on Thursday. Follow all
the action on the PokerStars Blog (http://www.pokerstarsblog.com).

JOE CADA ABOUT TO MAKE POKER HISTORY
November 9, 2009
The 21-Year Old Come Back Kid Aims at $8.5 Million and the title of Youngest WSOP Champ
WHAT: Joe Cada sits as chip leader and is about to make history at the 2009 World Series of
Poker as the youngest winner in the history of the Series earning $8.5 million
WHERE: 2009 World Series of Poker- Main Event Final Table at the Rio All-Suites Hotel & Casino
in Las Vegas, NV
WHEN: Final table play begins on Monday Nov 9 at 10:00 PM PST
The World Series of Poker Main Event began with 6,494 entrants two months ago. Now only two
players remain. The 2009 final table began on Saturday afternoon with the final nine players and
ended around 6 a.m. PST Sunday with Darvin Moon and chip leader, Joe Cada, sitting at the final
two seats.
At 21, Joe Cada is about to make poker history if he can outlast Darvin Moon, a logger from
western Maryland. Cada will become the youngest Main Event winner in the history of the World
Series of Poker. Team PokerStars PRO Peter Eastgate, who won last year at 22, currently holds
the record. Cada and Moon go head-to-head Monday night with play beginning at 10:00 PM PST.
The two will battle for the top prize of $8.5 million at the World Series of Poker, and for Cada, a
part of history as the youngest WSOP winner.
The 21-year-old Michigan native has been playing poker for six years. Cada couldn’t play in U.S.
casinos until he turned of age last November. But he played in Canada at 19, and he could also
play in the PokerStars Caribbean Adventure in the Bahamas as well as the PokerStars Latin
American Poker Tour in Costa Rica.
Cada began playing poker online at PokerStars.net. By the time he began college, he was playing
online poker so well that he withdrew from college to become a fulltime poker player.
“It would be pretty amazing if I did beat Peter Eastgate’s record,” Cada said after play ended on
Sunday. “This is surreal; I feel very fortunate right now. I might as well go buy a lottery ticket while
I’m at it!”
Cada is being labelled the ‘come back kid’ based on his historic comeback after being shortstacked
with eight players left. Cada currently holds a 9 to 4 chip lead over Moon and is now on
the verge of making history with his unexpected comeback. Cada sits with 135,950,000 chips,
while Moon holds 58,850,000
The 2009 WSOP Main Event Final Table will resume on Monday at 10pm PST at the Rio All-
Suites Hotel & Casino in Las Vegas.
EXCITING NEW EVENT ANNOUNCED IN THE POKERSTARS.COM FULL EPT SEASON 6 SCHEDULE
November 5, 2009
John Duthie, Chief Executive of the PokerStars.com European Poker Tour (EPT), today announced
the second half of the Season 6 schedule. The remaining six events span from Scandinavia to the
French Riviera. The schedule includes the much-celebrated EPT Grand Final in Monte Carlo in April,
as well as the exhilarating new event in the Austrian Alps: the first ‘EPT Snowfest’ in Saalbach-
Hinterglemm.
The addition of EPT Snowfest, running March 21-26, 2010 is likely to prove a massive hit with
players. They can enjoy plenty of invigorating ski and snowboard action when they’re not competing
at the poker tables. Saalbach-Hinterglemm is one of Austria’s premier ski areas and offers some of
the finest on and off-piste skiing in the country. As part of their prize, PokerStars qualifiers will be
staying at the luxurious Alpine Palace hotel during the six-day € 3,750 event. The prize package also
includes a bus transfer to and from Salzburg Airport and a six day ski package: lift pass, skis, boots
and poles.
The European Poker Tour, sponsored by PokerStars.com, is now the world’s largest poker tour in
terms of both players and prize pools. The tournaments take place in some of Europe’s most exciting
destinations. “There has been huge enthusiasm for the new EPT schedule and also for the bigger
’Festivals of Poker’ like the one we held in London, and will be holding at the PCA, Sanremo and
Monte Carlo events,” said John Duthie
“The spectacular success of the EPT London Poker Festival a few weeks ago shows that players
really relish the chance to play more side events, with a variety of games and buy-ins. We had huge
names entering – and winning – these events which created massive interest throughout the week.
With 730 players, the Main Event broke the record for the biggest poker tournament ever held in the
UK!” said Duthie
Last season’s EPT proved an outstanding success. With 11 events on the schedule, EPT Season 5
generated an overall prize pool of almost €55 million (approx $77 million USD) with 7,901 players
from 97 countries participating. EPT Season 6 has 13 events, and seems certain to smash records
once again.
Online satellites for the new EPT event in Vilamoura, Portugal and the PCA in The Bahamas are running
now on PokerStars.com with buy-ins from as little as $2.22. Players who qualify on PokerStars don’t just
win their seat: they also win luxury hotel accommodation (or cash equivalent) and spending money as
part of their prize package.
NEW POKERSTARS UK AND IRELAND POKER TOUR TO SUIT ALL POCKETS
November 3, 2009
PokerStars.com, the world’s largest poker site has announced the launch of the PokerStars.com UK and Ireland Poker Tour (UKIPT). The first UKIPT event will be held in Galway, Ireland from December 11-14, 2009, in the Radisson Hotel. The event will be part of the popular Irish Poker Championships. The first UK-based UKIPT event will be held in Manchester from February 11–14, 2010 at the Grosvenor G-Casino. The event will attract top names from around the UK and Ireland such as former England footballer Teddy Sheringham and Team PokerStars PRO Vicky Coren as well as other celebs and top professional poker players to be announced at a later date. “This is an incredibly exciting addition to the range of PokerStars live events. Here is our own local British and Irish tour, nicely accessible for those who can’t travel abroad very often or
who save their foreign travel for larger international events,” said Vicky Coren. The UKIPT is a fresh and exciting poker tour for amateur and professional players in the UK and Ireland. The events are being held in regional locations and will provide players with a first-class poker experience at an affordable local level. The events will have a range of buyin levels; from £500+£50 to £1,000+£100 for UK-based tournaments and €1,000+€100 and €2,000 for events in Ireland.
“The buy-ins are great: big enough to make chunky prize pools, not so big that they’re a huge drain on resources. It’s about time there was a serious respected tournament with a £500 buy-in, like the new ones in Manchester, Coventry and Nottingham,” added Vicky. In addition to a UKIPT title and prize money, players will also win a buy-in to the PokerStars.com EPT London event next October, which will also be the UKIPT
Championship Event. This will give regular season UKIPT finalists the chance to experience the exciting atmosphere playing in one of the biggest live poker tournaments outside of Vegas, alongside some of the biggest names in the world of poker. The UKIPT will have its own Points Leader Board that will be regularly updated. Players will be able to track their progress against other local players and professionals; including their
favourite Team PokerStars PROs. At the end of the season the top players from the UKIPT leader board will be rewarded with great prizes, including: a £10,000 freeroll for the top 100 players over the season; and the top three players will receive various levels of PokerStars.com sponsorship to events during the UKIPT’s second season.
Team PokerStars PROs attending the events will lead question and answer sessions ahead of play at selected UKIPT events giving players the opportunity to up their game with top tips from the PROs.
