JOSE ‘NACHO’ BARBERO CONTINUES HOT STREAK WITH VICTORY IN POKERSTARS.COM EPT LONDON HIGH ROLLER EVENT
Oktober 7, 2010
Team PokerStars Pro Jose ‘Nacho’ Barbero has won the PokerStars.com European Poker
Tour London High Roller event to cap off an incredible run of results over the past two years.
The Argentinian Team PokerStars Pro, who scored back-to-back LAPT Main Event victories
in Uruguay and Peru earlier in 2010, stunned the field again in London, enjoying the biggest
tournament win of his career by taking first place for £556,000 in the High Roller event.
With a £20,000 buy-in the field of 77 players proved to be a tough proposition and Barbero
had to overcome fellow Team PokerStars Pros on his way to glory. The main thorn in his
side at the final table was Vanessa Selbst, who held a commanding chip lead with just eight
remaining. However, after battling his way towards the top of the chip leaderboard, Barbero
won a vital coin-flip against Selbst to eliminate her in fourth, and went on to beat Finnish pro
Jani Sointula heads-up.
After winning the event, an ecstatic Barbero, said: “I’m really happy to have won such a big
tournament in Europe. Finishing first in back-to-back LAPT events was fantastic and very
tough, but I was desperate to continue that form elsewhere. Now I can say I’ve beaten a
world-class field in Europe – it’s a dream come true.”
Team PokerStars Pro, Bertrand ‘ElkY’ Grospellier, praised Barbero, saying: “It has been an
incredible year for Nacho. He has proved at two LAPT events, in major online tournaments
at PokerStars, and now at EPT London against an elite field, that he has the game to
compete with the best in the world. I believe he is set to be one of the game’s biggest stars.”
Nacho’s win on European soil isn’t his first of the year. In May he triumphed at the France
Poker Series, winning €40,123. Barbero has also proved his poker skills on the virtual felt in
2010, winning a $2,100 Fixed Limit Hold’em Spring Championship of Online Poker (SCOOP)
event for $62,780 in May, before more recently finishing third in the World Championship of
Online Poker (WCOOP) 8-Game High-Roller event for $172,900.
Jose Barbero has quickly ascended to the very top of the poker world in 2010 with combined
winnings in excess of $1.875 million. Nacho’s latest win now gives him a shot of also winning
the Card Player 2010 Player of the Year award – a remarkable achievement for the
Argentinian Team PokerStars Pro.
Sarne Lightman, Latin America Marketing Director, said: “PokerStars is extremely proud of
Nacho’s incredible success so far this year. At PokerStars we’ve always been committed to
investing in burgeoning poker markets and nurturing new generations of poker players. It’s
fitting that with Latin America becoming one of the world’s fastest growing poker markets,
the top Team Pro from that region explodes on to the global poker scene as one of the most
successful tournament players of 2010.”
POKERSTARS.COM ANNOUNCES MAMMOTH 2011 PCA SCHEDULE
Oktober 7, 2010
Ask any serious poker player where they spend the first half of January and the answer is
always the same: the PokerStars Caribbean Adventure (PCA) – a gleaming highlight on the
poker calendar and a one-stop solution to the winter blues.
Taking place at the sumptuous Atlantis Resort on Paradise Island in the Bahamas, the 2011
PCA is set to be better and richer than ever before. With more than $25,000,000 in
tournament prizes expected to be awarded, the PCA will once again be the richest poker
festival outside Las Vegas.
The ten-day festival, which takes place from January 7-16, will feature more than 50 poker
tournaments across a wide range of buy-ins, formats and variants. Event highlights include a
$100,000 Super High Roller, a $25,000 High Roller, a $10,000 Turbo 6-Max tournament,
several Bounty events, and the $10,300 Main Event. The 2010 champion, 19-year-old
Harrison Gimbel, walked away from Paradise Island with $2.2 million. With over 170 players
having qualified for the 2011 Main Event to date, and with more than $1.7 million already in
the prize pool, the 2011 PCA winner looks set to scoop even more!
Michael Ward, PCA Tournament Director, said: “The PCA is truly a Poker Player’s Paradise.
Each January thousands of players descend upon Atlantis to take part in the first major
tournament of the year. Last year’s event produced over $24 million in total prize money and
without a doubt the PCA 2011 is going to be richer than ever. The PCA is a must-play event
for both the recreational and the professional player.”
Satellite tournaments are already running on PokerStars, where players can begin their
quest for Caribbean glory for as little as 5 Frequent Player Points (FPPs). There is also a
wide range of Steps (from $7.50) and Cash satellites (from $2.22 up to the weekly $700
final). Please see http://www.pokerstarscaribbeanadventure.com/qualify/ for full details on
how to qualify to the PCA.
The $15,780 prize package includes the $10,300 Main Event buy-in, nine nights’
accommodation for two at the Atlantis Resort, plus $1,002 in spending money. Players can
also buy in to the tournament directly through the PokerStars client.
Since 2004, more than $50 million in prize money has been awarded at the PCA, a huge
portion of which has gone to PokerStars players. Former winners include Team PokerStars
Pro Bertrand “ElkY” Grospellier, Harrison Gimbel, Poorya Nazari (who pocketed $3 million
for his win), Ryan Daut, Steve Paul-Ambrose, John Gale and Gus Hansen.
George Markantonis, President, Atlantis, Paradise Island said: “We are very excited to be
hosting the seventh annual PokerStars Caribbean Adventure at Atlantis, Paradise Island,
this January. Not only do we have the largest and most exciting casino in the Caribbean,
Atlantis has the beaches, bars, restaurants and activities to ensure an unforgettable week.”
Away from the tables, Atlantis is one of the world’s most exciting resorts, with guests given
the chance to swim with dolphins, play golf on the championship course, marvel at more
than 50,000 fish and mammals in the on-site aquarium, or splash through the water slides,
river rides and swimming pools of the Aquaventure complex. Alternatively, there are few
better places to relax than beside the shimmering blue seas of the Caribbean, on any of the
resort’s numerous beaches.
Whether you are seeking the chest of gold awarded to the winner, or simply two weeks of
Caribbean paradise in the middle of winter, the PCA can provide it all.
